Allotment Water Tank

September 4, 2022 by snitterfield Leave a Comment

SACC have installed a 1000 litre water tank to bring a much-needed water supply to the allotments. A small pump has been fitted in Bell Brook which runs through the field next to the allotments. Water will be abstracted from the brook to keep the tank topped up. The pump will be driven by a solar panel mounted on to the tank. The tank has been mounted at the top of the allotments to allow standpipes to be installed at convenient locations on the allotment.

SACC would like to thank the Fete committee for their generous contribution to this project.

If you would like to take up an allotment you can enquire via email to Nicola Everall at snitterfieldpc@outlook.com

2020 Grants

October 19, 2020 by snitterfield Leave a Comment

2020 GRANTS

Application 1 (2020/1): Loft insulation – Resident (Requested £173.64 / Granted £250)

Carried forward from last year

Application 2 (2020/2): Wildflower Verge Pilot in Snitterfield (Requested £950 / Granted £50)

Carried forward from last year

Application 3 (2020/3): Insulation of skeilings – VHMC (Requested £1000 / Granted £2000)

Carried forward from last year

Application 4 (2020/4): Loft insulation – Resident (Requested £350 / Granted £1100)

This application was for the materials to allow the applicant to install an additional 200mm of loft insulation to give an overall thickness of greater that 270mm, which is the current recommended minimum thickness. The committee were please to grant this application in full as the amount of heat loss over an extended period will be very significant so the additional insulation will significantly reducing energy bill and carbon footprint. The committee further noted that they would be willing to increase the grant to cover the additional cost of installing Thermafleece CosyWool sheep’s wool insulation which has a relatively low embodied carbon content. Furthermore the committee agreed to increase the grant to a maximum total value of £1,100 to allow the applicant to optionally procure materials to lift the existing loft floor sufficiently to increase the insulation across the whole of the loft floor.

Application 5 (2020/5): Bell tower carpet – Bell ringers (Requested £80 / Not Granted)

Unfortunately SACC’s constitution only allows grants to be awarded that reduce the carbon footprint of Snitterfield parish. It is suggested that such a request for funds might be forthcoming from the fete committee.

Application 6 (2020/6): Trees and hedging – Andy Resident (Requested £100 / Granted £100)

Planting of 27 Yew trees for hedging and 7 Hornbeam trees as part of his house and garden project. SACC agreed to make a contribution to the planting of trees/hedging of £100.

Flooding, Wildlife & Climate Change

April 14, 2020 by snitterfield Leave a Comment

STAG

Snitterfield Trees Action Group.

The national effort to combat the impact of climate change and to mitigate flooding through tree planting is now underway with urgency.

  • Trees absorb significant quantities of greenhouse gases.
  • Trees reduce flooding, absorbing about 60% of run-off water from rainfall.
  • Trees absorb dangerous gases and trap damaging particulates. A simple row of trees in front of a home or school has been shown in research to reduce pollution inside homes by up to 60%. Adults and children are seven times less likely to develop asthma if they live in a tree lined road.
  • Trees reduce speeding and criminal behaviour.

Snitterfield is starting a group, with assistance from the Parish Council, focused on getting trees planted in order to take on the challenges of climate change and flooding but to also improve our immediate environment and encourage wildlife and biodiversity.

We need volunteers to make a difference. Over the next 10 years we plan to plant an area of over 1 square mile. If you would like to get involved then please email Claudine (claudine.pearson@snitterfieldpc.org.uk)

Power to the People

April 13, 2020 by snitterfield Leave a Comment

A vast tree planting campaign across the world could play a huge part in reducing our net carbon emissions. Tree planting is a climate change solution that is available now, is relatively low cost and every one of us can get involved. As trees grow, they absorb and store the carbon dioxide emissions that are driving global heating. The Committee on Climate Change says the UK needs to increase its woodland by around 30% – no small feat. But Individuals can make a tangible impact by growing trees themselves, donating to forest restoration organisations and avoiding irresponsible companies. Snitterfield Actioning Climate Change will be taking on the tree planting challenge in our community but we can’t do it alone. If you wish to get involved in the tree planting initiative please get in contact with SACC via our Contact link.

Whose carbon is it anyway?

April 13, 2020 by snitterfield Leave a Comment

Christmas is a period of shopping excess referred to by the retail sector as the “golden quarter”. China’s industry moves into overdrive to ensure shelves are stocked here in the UK. The reduction in climate change gases that we have achieved in the UK are partly through our choice to “off shore” our pollution by purchasing  products made in the Far East. Given that we only have one planet and climate change knows no borders, “off-shoring” our pollution helps no one. The real present that we can give our friends and families this Christmas is not to buy something that digs humanity’s grave just a little bit deeper. Consider a gift of planting or dedicating a tree.  www.shop.woodlandtrust.org.uk/trees
