School Recycle Bins

School children showing off new recycling bins!

The third Eco-Schools meeting took place at Snitterfield Primary School on 14th November, with lots of children and Mrs Ogden in attendance.
SACC supplied the school with two recycling bins, one for plastic bottles and one for Tetra Pak and similar beverage cartons. These were placed in the dinner hall. The children were very enthusiastic about squashing the bottles and wanted to name the bins! Mrs Ogden asked for volunteers to create some posters to draw attention to the recycling facilities.
We talked about the various products that can be made from the plastic bottles including plant pots, car parts, toys, drainage pipes and fleece for clothing. The Tetra Paks are broken down into their three core materials, paper, plastic and foil and recycled accordingly.
The school are already composting their fruit leftovers, and recycling paper and printer cartridges.
Finally the children posed for a photo for the SACC website and they couldn’t wait to see themselves on their computers! That photo is shown above.

The second Eco schools meeting took place at Snitterfield Primary School on 10th July, with 10 children and Mrs Ogden. We discussed progress on the environmental review, which had been completed at the last meeting. The campaign to switch off lights and electrical items when not in use is underway and will be re-inforced next term. Read more at the Warwickshire County Council Switch it off campaign.
The school is recycling paper and will now be collecting plastic bottles for recycling at Burton Farm. They should be washed and squashed, and can have their lids left on. Mrs Ogden felt sure she could find pupils willing to squash the bottles!
We looked at the ‘Megaman’ light bar, which is a display with many kinds of energy efficient light bulbs. The children loved turning them on and off and touching them, and were particularly impressed with the new dimmable type of bulb. They were given a questionnaire to complete at home which involves counting all their light bulbs at home and listing how many were energy efficient. This questionnaire will be given to all the children at the school next term, and will be completed again in 6 months time to chart progress.
